OFF THE CUFF

Closet Envy by Sarah Alexandra

There was a time when closets were merely a place to store your clothing and accessories. A bedroom closet served a simple purpose and allowed you to keep your belongings out of sight. A closed door also allowed a bit more discretion for the, shall we say, organizationally challenged. That was then and now a days bedroom closets have become as important to many as any other room in the house. Closets have become a place to artfully display clothing, shoes and accessories with great planning and attention to detail put into their creation.

The modern dream closet has transformed into a space where one can not only get dressed, but actually spend time relaxing. They look more like modern galleries, where fashions are displayed as they would be in any upscale boutique found around the world. Where shoes used to be kept in boxes, possibly with a Polaroid on the front for easy access, they are now arranged for viewers to admire. Handbags are coordinated by color, style, shape and size creating an enviable array surely to please the most discerning fashionista. Some have even gone to great length, sparing no expense, to create an intimate salon-like environment where secrets are shared and memories created. We have put together some of our favorite closets that truly make us swoon. We love to dream about the closet we would design. Of course Sarah Alexandra shirts would be prominently featured!

Aerin Lauder radiates beauty, strength and sophistication. The granddaughter of cosmetics legend, Estee Lauder, has been on every best dressed list and created her own eponymous lifestyle brand. It should come as no surprise that her closet represents the same timeless elegance and luxury that she does. We adore the chandelier and hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper.

The mix of modern and traditional decor in this closet blends together seamlessly. We love the antique chandelier, soft blue of the walls and graphic carpet.

Cindy Crawford made her name strutting down the runway wearing the most glamorous fashions in the world. However her closet represents her genuine “All-American” spirit. We can practically feel the Malibu breeze coming through the windows. This is the perfect setting for a mother-daughter moment.

These beautiful pieces with glass tops, pull out drawers and lucite trays are a perfect solution for organizing and storing clothing and accessories.

The custom island made of rosewood and leather are the focal point of this modern closet. The light wood floor and hand blown glass light fixture tie it all together. We would love to sip a glass of bubbly while getting ready for a night out on the town!

Designer Monique Lhuillier’s closet is the perfect environment to showcase her beautiful designs. The cool gray tones play off the luxe feel of the cascading chandelier and over the top stools.

With this many gorgeous shoes, it’s almost a crime to keep them hidden behind a closed door! So many red soles we can hardly control ourselves!

We love the way Khloe Kardashian houses her impressive shoe collection. She even has a separate section for athletic shoes. Now that’s commitment!

New York City Guide

New York City Guide

New York City, NYC, the Big Apple… No matter which moniker you use, it is hands down, one of the most fabulous cities in the world. With its innovative architecture, endless assortment of bars and restaurants, world class museums and epicenter for fashion, theater and design, this is a city that truly has something for everyone. Inspired by our recent trip and show at EDIT/Coterie we thought we would offer you a list of some of our favorite places to eat, shop and sights to see – all while enjoying some of the best people watching found anywhere.

Restaurants + Bars + Bakeries

1) Augustine

Neighborhood: Tribeca

Famed restaurateur Keith McNally’s latest restaurant has become an instant hit largely due to the sumptuous menu of French classics. The cheese soufflé and the creamed spinach is a must!  The beautiful bistro like interior is unbelievably welcoming. New Yorkers have long been devotees of French restaurants, bistros and cafes. With Augustine, they have a new destination to add to their lists.

Website: http://augustineny.com

2) Ring Ding Bakery – Duane Park Patisserie

Neighborhood: Tribeca

We stumbled upon this delicious bakery while shopping in Tribeca and soon discovered that it was the naughtiest pick me up in the city.  Any baby-boomer will remember this classic – on the West Coast it was known as a Ding-Dong and on the East Coast it was referred to as the Ring Ding.  There is an enormous selection of flavors but after several samples our personal favorite was the rainbow flavor – it has a hint of almond flavoring that was divine.  It is the perfect spot to bring your kids for a very special and unforgettable treat but we’re warning you – you’ll be dragging them out kicking and screaming.

3) The Hideaway

Neighborhood: Tribeca

They had us at gastropub! The Hideaway is, well, hidden away amongst the busy streets of Tribeca. The rock and roll themed decor lends itself to the elevated bar food. We especially love the decadent white truffle and asiago fries and breadless lump crab cakes!

Website: http://thehideawaynyc.com

4) Shake Shack

Neighborhood: Scattered all over NYC!

Sometimes, you just need a good burger. Shake Shack has brought fast food to a new level with their delicious burgers and fries. When they opened their original location lines were so long they installed a cam on their website so you could check the length before heading out. This is a classic burger done right and the shakes are pretty great too!

Website: https://www.shakeshack.com

5) The Vine

Neighborhood: Times Square

In recent years, Times Square has gotten a much needed image overhaul.  However, it is not exactly known as a food mecca. Perhaps with the addition of The Vine this vibrant neighborhood may just be turning a proverbial corner.  Think bistro fare with a European touch and killer cocktail menu!

Website: http://www.thevine.nyc

6) The Waverly Inn and Garden

Neighborhood: West Village

When it reopened in 2005, the only way to get a table at the Waverly Inn was by calling a number only made available to the fabulous, powerful and well connected. This storied Greenwich Village classic continues to delight diners to this day.

Website: http://www.waverlynyc.com

7) Juice Generation

Neighborhood: Scattered all over NYC!

Certain food trends come and go, but thankfully, juice seems to be here to stay. With its menu of fresh juices, smoothies and acai bowls, Juice Generation has just the right choice to satisfy your cravings. Lucky for us they have locations scattered throughout the city.

Shopping

1) Barneys New York

Neighborhood: Uptown & Downtown

Barneys may have begun by selling men’s suits at discounted prices, but oh how things have changed. Whether you shop at the Madison Avenue Flagship or the original newly restored and reopened Chelsea location, you will not be disappointed. The sleek modern decor pairs perfectly with the fabulous array of designer clothing and accessories. When fashion fatigue sets in, pop into Fred’s for a bite or a cocktail at the bar. And yes, the salads are worth every penny!

Website: https://www.barneys.com

2) Bergdorf Goodman

Neighborhood: Upper East Side

Bergdorf Goodman is the epitome of grandeur and class. With a rich history, profiled in the film Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s. This is a department store that caters to the luxury clientele. They offer a range of international fashion designs for men, women and home, two dining options and the world famous John Barrett Salon. If you are in NYC over the holidays, be sure to check out their windows. They are a sight to behold!

Website: http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com

3) Nili Lotan

Neighborhood: Tribeca

Nilli Lotan is all about chic, everyday luxury, offering the most covetable and timeless pieces out there. With her rich color palettes and ability to elevate basic pieces to classic wardrobe staples a visit to this store is an absolute must!

Website: https://www.nililotan.com

4) Belgium Shoes

Neighborhood: Upper East Side

Belgian Loafer is an international institution located in the heart of NYC.  The factory is based in Belgium and solely dedicated to the art of producing one of the most comfortable shoes on the planet for men & women. With one tiny store front just off Park Avenue on East 55th Street you will find an unlimited selection of colors, materials and patterns of this handcrafted shoe.  Our personal favorite for Fall is the pony-skinned camouflage that we couldn’t leave Manhattan without.

Sightseeing

1) The Highline

Neighborhood: Chelsea

The Highline was formally opened in June of 2009, after transforming an abandoned railroad track into a public space. Now it has become one of the most popular outdoor spaces in the city, thanks to the beautifully kept gardens, art installations and food vendors. Walking the highline is an experience not to be missed.

Website: http://www.thehighline.org

2) Whitney Museum of American Art

Neighborhood: Meatpacking District

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney established her namesake museum as a place to showcase American artists who at that time had a difficult time getting recognized for their efforts. Moving from the Upper East Side to Gansevoort Street, just beside the entrance to the Highline, in 2015 reestablished the Whitney as one of the leading art museums in the world. We recommend you start at the top floor and make your way down. Be sure to check out the views from the outdoor areas!

Website: https://whitney.org

3) Chelsea Art Galleries

Neighborhood: Chelsea

If you feel like seeing art, but don’t want to go to a museum, consider  gallery hopping in Chelsea. Grab brunch at Cook Shop or Chelsea Market and make your way to the numerous galleries that occupy several streets west of tenth avenue between 20th and 26th streets. There you will find everything from large spaces featuring some of the biggest names in the international art world, to multi-floored buildings housing smaller galleries on each floor. It’s a great way to squeeze in a lot of culture and best of all, they are are all free!

Adults Only Weekend Getaways!

Kids are wonderful and they bring an immeasurable amount of happiness and joy to our lives. That said there are times when it is a little difficult to remember this particular perspective! Additionally, between school, after school activities and playdates, it can be challenging to remember to make time for yourself. That’s why we believe there is no better remedy than an adults only weekend getaway! First, choose your destination.  Depending on whether you are craving the beach, the desert or somewhere in between. From there, decide where you would like to stay. Do you prefer a full service hotel, a spa or a cabin? Whatever your preferences may be, there is something absolutely indulgent about a quick trip where the sole purpose is to relax, unwind and have fun. Whether you spend it with your sweetie or with the girls, we believe in the power of a weekend away. We’ve put together a collection of some of our favorite west coast retreats for your travels. Bon Voyage!

Ojai, California is nestled into a picturesque valley long known for its natural beauty and thriving health focused and spiritual communities. Originally opened in 1923, The Ojai Valley Inn and Spa is an absolute gem. As soon as you arrive you feel the quiet luxury lulling you into relaxation. Have a massage, walk the grounds or lay out by the pool because pampering yourself is a must!

Palm Springs always the right place for a quick fix of sun and fun. Sparrows Lodge is a modern, rustic retreat with roots as an old Hollywood resort. Although it is in the heart of Palm Springs, it feels more like a cabin in the woods. The spaces are so thoughtfully appointed, it feels like the home you wish you had. Stay in a garden or poolside room or go ahead book “The Cabin”. You totally deserve it!

Located in the exclusive enclave of Montecito, California is The San Ysidro Ranch. Tucked away in the foothills of the mountains with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean is where you will find the San Ysidro Ranch. Make no mistake, this is not a boots and hat kind of ranch. They call their rooms hideaways and this resort is perfect for those looking to escape reality. In fact, JFK and Jackie spent part of their honeymoon at the ranch. Need we say more?

If you have never been to the Oregon Coast, you are missing out on something truly special. Picture miles of beautiful sandy beaches, massive rock formations jutting out of the water and giant purple and orange starfish. The best way to truly enjoy this region of the Pacific Northwest is to stay in a cabin. Coastal Cabins is an intimate resort with an assortment of cabins to suit your style. The simple, yet elegant decor mix perfectly with the natural surroundings. While there, be sure to check out some of the great towns and indulge in the freshly caught seafood. Once you visit the Oregon Coast we can practically guarantee you will be back!

Sometimes you just need to smell the salty, sea air, and feel the sand beneath your feet. Shutters on the Beach can offer you all of that and quite a bit more. Shutters is the destination for those who want to get away, but might want a bit of city life mixed in. Situated in Santa Monica, California, Shutters is close to amazing shopping, museums and restaurants. Ride a bike along the beach under the California sunshine, experience the spa or enjoy one of their fabulous dining experiences. There is really no wrong choice to be made here!

Behind The Scenes Fall 2017 Photo Shoot

Have you ever flipped through the pages of your favorite fashion magazine and wondered what it takes to get that perfect shot? We can tell you that there is an incredible amount of preparation and hard work that goes into each of those beautiful images. We thought we would give you a sneak peek into the behind the scenes of our Sarah Alexandra Fall 2017 photo shoot.

For each season, Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter, Sarah Alexandra produces five new fabrics. These luxury textiles are sourced from some of the finest mills in Italy; Albini, Thomas Mason and Grandi & Rubinelli.  Once the fabrics are selected, they are sent from Italy to the manufacturer in Canada.  From there, samples are created, which will be used in our photo shoot. We have two styles of Sarah Alexandra shirts; the Signature Shirt and the Weekend Shirt.

We reach out to top model agencies such as Ford, Elite, Seattle Models Guild and Heffner Management asking them to send us a package of models from which we can choose the perfect Sarah Alexandra brand ambassador for that particular season.

Once our model has been selected and confirmed, we book our very talented and favorite make-up artist, Melissa Korn #melissakornmakeupartist and exceptional photographer Tereza Janakova #terezajanakova.

Once we have the logistics squared away, we get to the fun and creative part of the process. The first thing we do is put together all of the clothing and accessories to pair with each shirt. In order to prepare for the ten looks being photographed, we look at current fashion trends and what is currently available in stores. Once each look has been completely styled, we take photographs in our showroom to use as a reference on the day of the shoot. This helps to keep us organized, efficient and running smoothly during the long day at the studio.

On the day of the shoot, we arrive at 8:00 AM along with the make-up artist. We unpack the clothes and accessories.  We steam and iron all of the shirts to ensure they are perfect and photo ready. Our make-up artist organizes all the necessary supplies for make-up and hair in the dressing room. The photographer arrives a bit earlier to set up the lighting, cameras and equipment. At 9:00 AM the model arrives and goes straight into hair and make-up. Then comes a much-needed coffee run!

After the model has been to hair and make-up, we begin dressing and styling her for the first look. As the model moves through each shot there are constant tweaks and adjustments that need to be made to the lighting, hair, make-up, and styling.  We reference the photographer’s computer to make the necessary changes.

One of the best parts of our day is when our friends stop by to say hello and see us in action!  Thank you to everyone for all of your support – you know who you are!

The long day ends at 6:00 PM when we pack everything up and bring it all back to our showroom with our hair on fire and ready to swallow a martini!

We eagerly await the initial images from our photographer, Tereza.  We look over all of the photographs and select the images that need to be photoshopped in case of any unwanted wrinkles or unexpected make-up marks. Following this process, we upload the final images to our website.  And VOILA! just like that a new collection is revealed!

Trends For Fall 2017

While we continue to bask in the glow of the summer sun, you may not realize that your favorite boutiques and department stores are clearing space in order to make room for the arrival of fall collections. Fall fashion shows are held in New York, Paris, London, and Milan, for editors, buyers, and international fashion stars. These collections offer viewers a taste of which trends will make their way from runway to reality. Consider these looks as a suggestion rather than a rule.  How you pick and choose which pieces you will embrace is up to you.  One trend for Fall 2017, which we took notice of was the use of menswear inspired fashions appearing on runways in every city. Models hit the catwalks in plaids, trench coats, and pant suits.  We think this trend is the perfect compliment for our Fall 2017 Collection.

We adore the structured feel of this Ralph Lauren blazer.

It would go perfectly with the grey and white plaid cashmere flannel of our Signature Shirt in Polar Icing.

This Narciso Rodriquez ensemble is the perfect example of an updated modern classic.

This modern trench coat would pair perfectly with our Signature Shirt in Power Player.

We love the rich color palette, and mix of textures in Max Mara’s fall show.

Paired with the windowpane of our In The Know Signature Shirt would be a match made in fashion heaven!

This Lavin suit is the epitome of elegance and femininity.

Consider pairing it with our luxurious navy blue cashmere Signature Shirt, Parisian Dream, a nod to the birthplace of fashion.

London City Guide

London City Guide

When thinking of international hot spots, there are a few that always come to mind. That list may vary depending on whom you speak with. However, you will most likely think of Paris, Rome, Berlin, New York, and no list would be complete without London. A mix of tradition and innovation, London has long been a global superpower with history dating back to the Roman Empire. The capital city of the U.K. blends rich history with a modern pulse that we find quite captivating. Recently the world has watched as the city struggled, and our hearts poured out for those affected by tragedy. Through it all the city came together to keep calm and carry on. Seattle Summer Hot Spots!

There are many amazing things about Seattle. We have tremendous natural beauty, amazing restaurants, culture, and a booming economy, altering the skyline and population density daily! One thing that we are also known for is, the rain. While it does rain quite a bit here, there is one big reason we endure the grey skies and soggy days. That reason is... summer! Soon the gloom will part, leaving us with a radiant blue sky that will span for months. Summer is the raison d’etre for the inhabitants of the emerald city, and we all delight as the city comes to life right before our eyes.

It’s not just the weather that puts an extra spring in our step, it’s the abundance of incredible activities for us to enjoy as we strive to soak up as much vitamin D that we can like a squirrel storing up nuts for the long winter. Seattle is a city made up of curious juxtapositions and hi/low mixes. It is without a doubt a city like no other. We thought it would be fun to comprise a list of some of our favorite places to eat, shop, and play. It is a bit of an eclectic mix, an homage to our fair city. For sure, there is something for everyone, enjoy!
